The primary function of selenium in the body is involvement in antioxidant systems and the metabolism of thyroid hormones.
Deep selenium deficiency can cause cardiomyopathy and excessive consumption of dietary supplements can cause symptoms of poisoning. Adequate intake is associated with the potential for cancer and cardiovascular prophylaxis.
Selenium is needed for:
to strengthen the immune system,
for the normal production of thyroid hormones,
as a component of an antioxidant enzyme that acts in cells, thereby contributing to the protection of cell function against adverse factors, including premature aging.
Very high levels of selenium in the blood (over 100 µg / dl) can cause selenosis, the symptoms of which are the smell of garlic in the mouth, nail breakage and hair loss. Selenium poisoning can occur in an area with high levels of selenium compounds in the environment, either due to industry or accidents. It is not possible to consume harmful amounts of selenium when eating unpolluted food.
